Our name
The name Grasshopper holds a captivating tale rooted in the world of kung-fu cinema from the 1970s, where a legendary sensei took center stage to guide and inspire. In this cinematic masterpiece, the sensei, a revered and wise martial arts master, bestowed his wisdom upon an eager young disciple, endearingly referring to him as "Grasshopper".
Just as the sensei in the kung-fu movie shared invaluable insights and empowered his disciple to overcome challenges, Grasshopper endeavors to achieve the same through peer support.
For this reason, newcomers to the program are also light-heartedly referred to as Grasshoppers.
In the Bible, the grasshopper is described as a creature of little strength, yet it captures the essence of diligence, preparation, and adaptability:
"Four things on earth are small, yet they are extremely wise: Ants are creatures of little strength, yet they store up their food in the summer; hyraxes are creatures of little power, yet they make their home in the crags; locusts have no king, yet they advance together in ranks; a lizard can be caught with the hand, yet it is found in kings' palaces."
We encountered this passage after the organization had already been named, and found its strikingness to be profound.
Like the grasshoppers, we also have no king and claim no central authority on addiction recovery, "yet we advance together in ranks". This casts light on the idea that the newcomer, the Grasshopper, is essential for the group's progress.
We note that Grasshopper Philosophy upholds an agnostic approach, directing its focus towards addiction recovery treatment through the integrative lens of scientific, social, and spiritual domains. It holds no religious affiliation in any capacity but respects its members' choice to believe whatever they wish, encouraging them to pursue their own spiritual path.
